People always ask what SAMA means. It started as kind of a joke. It was a sleeting, snowy day in early December. My friend and I were surfing a swell in Grand Haven. I looked over at him knowing we were supposed to both be at pre-Christmas family functions soon, and said "We are like Self Absorbed Michigan Adventurers." That kind of stuck, and like many of our friends we have a common passion for outdoor sports in Michigan, and we go out in any weather to get our sessions. He replied "Ya, SAMA!"

So it was born, the SAMA logo was fashioned by another like minded surfer friend from Grand Haven. SAMA is for all of you year round Michiganders and vacationers who know, love, and respect all the outdoor activities there are to do in Michigan. No matter the weather you will find us us out enjoying all the benefits of our unique freshwater paradise.

Mulder "Man"cation

Hope everyone had a killer weekend! I just got back from an epic yaking trip with my Dad and Bro's from Pictured Rocks. The colors were raging and so were the 30 knot off shore winds which made for perfect cliff exploration in kayaks. We yak surfed several waves along the cliffs and rocks on one of the more choppy days and did a little cliff-jump'n body surfing too. Can't wait for some decent surf back on the home front. Rock-on!

Holland Mushers

Hey Crew,

Here is a few photos that were taken by Mike Sabatino's buddy. The surf was pretty fun. Johan was trippin on all the dudes super stoked on the wind slop. He later said it was such a cool vibe. It was a good time, and hopefully we will get some waves at some point this weekend. If no waves, at least some kiting. Keep those posts coming, and lets keep our eyes on the forecast to hopefully score a weekend up in the UP.

Puppies join the SAMA team

Well, not AS advENturous as SOME of you epic Samanians, but Aaron and I got the puppies out enjoying the great outdoors in the kayaks on our beatiful labor day weekend :-) Roxie was a tweaker at first but once she got sleepy she came back in my boat and did well. Bodhi is always a chiller (like his dad) :-)

Saturday 15th Adopt-A-Beach

Hey ya'll! Saturday September 15th is the Alliance for the Great Lakes Annual Adopt-A-Beach! There are many locations in Ottawa & Muskegon Counties...you can check them out online and register to volunteer at:

www.greatlakesadopt.org

I am the coordinator for the Muskegon State Park clean up...and could suggest possibly some SAMA support up there before the Irish Music Festival??? Or it could be pretty cool to see a SAMA shirt at every surf beach in the area...

Facts about the Adopt-A-Beach:
  • It is international! Lakes, Rivers, Oceans...all around the world get a good cleaning on September 15th!
  • Since 1986 thousands of volunteers from around the globe have cleared over 100 million pounds of trash from 170,000 miles of shorelines, rivers, lakes, and wetlands!
  • They have underwater clean ups as well...bring your dive gear!!

let me know if you have any questions...tell all your friends!!

Fabulous Friday!!

Wow, the kite competition was actually cancelled due to high winds! That didn't stop the ragers from hitting it on their small boards and small kites. I of course was not there until school got out, and had the chance to kite in some big waves before the wind died out. Carving up waves with the freedom to go where you want on the kite was nothing short of epic. Then we headed to the rockpile and surfed until dark. With a huge south swell in the water, and the wind dying and switching west the rockpile turned on and the conveyor belt was working! Rides all the way into the beach and walk back out the pier. I am sure everyone else got wet yesterday so comment in and lets hear all the epic swashbuckling GL surf tales! Looks like Pere Marquette could switch around for kiting later today. SAMA rules!!!

King of the Great Lakes

Samainians,

The King of the Great Lakes got off to a boom tonight! The wind was up and down, but as the sunset came in the wind cranked back up and we started rippin.... Tomorrow it should go off again, the wind raiders will head to the skies and once again shred the waters of Lake Michigan. Hopefully get some surf too....
