Michigan's Birthday! Jan. 26th 1837

We are 172 years old!


Today with my students we will celebrate our states birthday, and those pioneers who came, hacked a spot for the sun to shine out of the wilderness and built this beautiful state we now enjoy today. Mosquitoes, long cold winters, wolves, and the occasional Indian friends were most of the early Michigan pioneers only companions. Yet, they knew there was so much potential all around them. Now, 172 years after statehood it is easy for us to think that Michigan has lost that potential. Everyday the news tells us how much Michigan is hurting, and its economy is in the shambles. However, I see a potential that few of the naysayers do. It's a fresh new perspective, a pioneering spirit of things to come. I am preaching to the choir a little here, and I thank you all for your ability to see the potential of the outdoor pursuits that lay within our borders. And I also believe you see that potential we have for a new economic beginning. We are the decendents of those pioneers came, and we are the people who have chose to stay, chose to return, and to rekindle the pioneering spirit of making the new Michigan. The Michigan of the future. Thanks for all your support. The spirit of SAMA is alive!

Adult Night at the Ski Bowl

Hey crew,

We had a great time tonight riding the ski bowl.  Adult night, means only 18 and up allowed on the hills.  There were only about 20 people out there, and that made the riding really fun.  One bonus is you can bring your own beer to the lodge there!  Remember Tuesday nights from 6-9pm.  See you next week!

K-wings vs. Lumberjacks Jan. 17th

Next Saturday, the Muskegon Lumberjacks currently 4th in IHL league standings will take the ice against the league leading Kalamazoo Wings. Of course, growing up at Wings stadium in Kalamazoo makes me a bit of a Wings fan, but I have a growing love for the old Lumberjack rivals.

Let's get a crew out for the game next Saturday Jan. 17th! Maybe we can get some pond hockey in during the day to make it a full on hockey adventure. Tailgating in the parking lot at Spring Lake, then home for showers, and head to LC Walker Arena for the game.

Pond Hockey

We had a great time playing on the outdoor rink in Spring Lake this weekend.  The plan is this Thursday night at 6:00-6:30pm.  The rink is lighted so come on out for some good pond hockey action!

New Year's Eve on the South End

I apologize for not posting in a bit, but this photo was taken by some south-end wave pirates on New Year's Eve.  Since then ice has locked them up a bit.  But, keep your eyes on the south end throughout the winter.  It will break up and can give us a much needed surf session mid winter.
