People always ask what SAMA means. It started as kind of a joke. It was a sleeting, snowy day in early December. My friend and I were surfing a swell in Grand Haven. I looked over at him knowing we were supposed to both be at pre-Christmas family functions soon, and said "We are like Self Absorbed Michigan Adventurers." That kind of stuck, and like many of our friends we have a common passion for outdoor sports in Michigan, and we go out in any weather to get our sessions. He replied "Ya, SAMA!"

So it was born, the SAMA logo was fashioned by another like minded surfer friend from Grand Haven. SAMA is for all of you year round Michiganders and vacationers who know, love, and respect all the outdoor activities there are to do in Michigan. No matter the weather you will find us us out enjoying all the benefits of our unique freshwater paradise.

Euro Car

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to show you my new car. Just kidding. Hiliarious!! But, it gets about 60 miles to the gallon on unleaded gas. Pretty sure you can`t fit a longboard in there though. Guess I will have to start surfing a fish more often instead of a longboard. However, it would look pretty sweet with a longboard strapped to the roof. I took it for a spin and it drives real nice. With gas being about 8 dollars a gallon over here, it sure is easy on the wallet. This is our friend Lisa`s car. I would like one for my drive to Zeeland everyday!

This car is 10,000 brand new!

Sveta Marina Croatia

Hey Crew,

We just returned from five days in Croatia. One of our favorite spots in the whole wide world is a little secluded campground on the Istra Peninsula of Croatia. Many of you have seen pictures from our other trips down there, and this year was epic again. Here are a few pics of our campsite, and the local area. The water gets so deep so fast, and with lots of tropical fish, octopus, and tuna there is always something down there to look at. The place is great for scuba, but I usually just freedive. Beautiful water and mountains. Anna and I would like to spend several weeks there next time. Here are some highlights of the trip.

Flying Hull in Florida

What's up peoples, Zack and I had a great day yesterday sailing his cat all over the Indian River lagoon and offshore Stuart area. The wind was perfect for a couple of heavy weights and an 18ft catamaran. We flew some hull, drank some rum and kept cool in the Florida summer sun. Hope everyone up north is having a great weekend too.

Team Boyne Member on Everest

SAMA or Not? You better believe this dude is SAMA to the core. Meet Helmut Lintzbechler he lives about 30 minutes from Anna's hometown in Der Stiermark of Austria. He is 65 years old, and we have taught skiing and snowboarding with him for the past 5 years at Boyne Highlands. His list of masochistic adventures is long. Just to name a few; he completed the only race across American (3 months they ran from San Diego to New York, 40-60 miles a day). Yes I said running not biking. He has climbed all the 14 thousand peaks in North America, he will this fall climb the highest peak on Antartica to complete his quest of climbing all the highest peaks on every continent of planet Earth. It wouldn't suprise me if he headed to the moon next! He ran a marathon in all the 50 states, and now he puts Mount Everest on his list. The best part is after he summitted Everest he came back down and ran the Everest Base Camp Marathon. Dude, what does this guy eat???? He asked me this spring if I wanted to run the Grand Rapids marathon with him in October because he will be here for it. Of course my answer was sure, as long as the surfs not up.

So, the next time someone tells says your to old to do those things. Just reply, "You might be, but I'm not."

Rock on Helmut!! I only regret not giving him a SAMA shirt to hold up when he was at the summit of Everest. That would have been EPIC!!

The Junk Raft (15,000 plastic bottles setting sail)

Samainians,

Check out these guys! They built a raft out of junk (plastic bottles, old airplane, and other junk). They are currently sailing from Hawaii to California to raise awareness about how disposable plastic is destroying our waterways. The video is very cool!
